Salvia officinalis, being the Latin name for Sage, has a long history of use in magic, folklore, and in rituals for protection, purifying and cleansing one’s environment. Bundles of Sage were hung over doors to repel negative energies, harm, and to keep evil spirits away.
Associated with the Warlock “Merlin,” Sage was believed to endow wisdom, foresight, and the ability to see the future, bringing in good luck to the user as well as being used in the granting of wishes.
Sage’s Healing Properties
Sage has been used medicinally, to help fight infections, being one of the most effective antimicrobial herbs to combat colds, flu, catarrh and sore throat infections thus earning the name of “herb of immortality”.
The herb is an excellent “digestive bitter” by its ability to increase digestion and the absorption of nutrients. Sage tea is a great diuretic which helps the body clear toxins so can be a useful herb in the treatment of arthritis and gout.
The herbs estrogenic properties have been used to regulate periods, bring relief to period pains as well as easing symptoms of sweating in menopause and in particular hot flushes.
Precaution: Do not take Sage during pregnancy or when breast feeding, Consult your Doctor or Health advisor if on any medication to check if there is the potential of adverse interactions or if you are unsure.
Making a Smudge Stick
One of the simplest ways to use Sage’s Magical properties is by using the herb as a “Smudge Stick”. If you find the smell of Sage a little overpowering, add additional herbs to the bundle like Lavender or Rosemary, (use soft cuttings).
Stage Stick Recipe
Use a handful of soft Sage cuttings (No pesticides).
Gather 5–8 inch stems, split the Sage bundle in half, reverse one half so that you have leaves and stems on both sides. Bundle them tightly with cotton or hemp twine, letting them dry upside down in a cool, dark place for 1–2 weeks. Ensure the leaves are pointing one direction and are all the same length, cut a length of string and wrap tightly around the bundle in a spiral towards the top, then crisscross back down to the base to form an X-shape, trim any excess.
Hang the stick upside down storing in a cool, dark, dry place for 1-2 weeks to prevent mould, letting it dry until brittle. Once completely dry, use the stick by lighting one end, let it burn for 20–30 seconds, then blow out the flame, allowing it to smoke not burn. Make sure to keep an eye on your Sage stick until it has burnt out on its own.
Use in a Visualisation
When you are relaxed and ready to start the Visualisation light your Sage Stick and place it into a fireproof dish close to you while sitting down comfortably. Picture yourself releasing any negative thoughts that you have been having or see yourself releasing any heavy or stagnant energy that you may be holding onto in yourself or feel around you in your home.
See this energy disappear up into the air just like the smoke coming from the Sage Stick watch this energy float away from you into the atmosphere, having no more effect on you, the energy has now gone. Then when you’re ready finish off by thanking the Sage for her powerful releasing energy that she gave to you.
