Strengthening the Heart
Hawthorn is known as being the best herb to “Strengthen the Heart” due to the herbs ability to improve blood flow by regulating the hearts rhythm. The herb is also rich in Flavonoid Compounds, having antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties which function as mild vasodilators that help to reduce and regulate blood pressure.
Spiritually the Hawthorn tree is deeply tied to the heart chakra just as the thorns of the Hawthorn tree protect its fragile blossoms and berries, its spiritual essence teaches us how to protect our emotional core and set healthy, loving boundaries, opening the heart to deep self-love.
The herb also acts as a soothing balm for grief, deep sadness, processing loss and spiritual heartbreak. It provides a comforting, stabilizing energy when you feel isolated or disconnected from your true purpose. It symbolizes the fine balance between fierce protection (the thorns) and unconditional love (the berries) which offers gentle, grounding energy enabling one to move forward with a stronger heart.
Celtic Mythology:
In Celtic Lore, the Hawthorn tree is sacred and known as the “fairy tree” which stands at the threshold between the physical and spiritual worlds. Damaging or cutting down a Hawthorn fairy tree is traditionally believed to bring severe misfortune, bad luck, or illness.
In Ireland it is not unusual to see Hawthorn trees decorated with fairy doors frequently found in public parks, hiking trails, and botanical gardens, often inspiring children to leave small notes or treats at the trees base in the hopes of receiving a magical reply.
A Simple Tea Meditation:
Following is a simple tea meditation to strengthen one’s heart.
Use a handful of dried or crushed Hawthorn berries and steep them in hot water for several minutes for an herbal tea.
Once the tea is ready, sit quietly holding the cup of tea. Take a sip and as you feel the warm tea moving down towards your heart area visualise the Hawthorn tea strengthening your heart, soothing away emotional worries or emotional pain that is still lingering, see or feel this energy now being released, disappearing and no longer having any power over you.
Take another sip and as the tea moves down towards your heart area, now focus on your breath, breathe into your heart centre visualising it expanding, feel the energy of love, protection, and emotional resilience surrounding your heart, and know that it will always be there.
Sit with this feeling and images until this process feels complete.
Precaution:
There is a Precaution with taking Hawthorn as the herb can actively lower blood pressure and cause sedation, if on Medication it should always be avoided. It’s also Not recommended for children, or when pregnant or if breastfeeding. Always Consult your Doctor or Health Practitioner if you are unsure.
